  Organizations resist change. A well functioning organization establishes routines, relationships and ways of doing things that make everyday life easier. People become accustomed to the operations, and work well within the environment established. Change disturbs corporate operations. Things no longer work the way they had.

 Change has become the constant in business and society. Computers, the Internet, instant communications, E-business, terrorists, political changes, expanding world markets, and changing government regulations all affect the previously smooth functioning of organizations. Economic improvements or downturns affect company operations and profits. Things no longer work smoothly. People are unsure of their future and of their position in the organization.

 Even well organized changes, such as the installation of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, may not progress smoothly. Seventy-five percent of ERP installations fall short of the planned benefits. Some companies have been forced out if business by botched ERP installations.
